G | Stupid bastard firefox options screen! |
Phil | haha! |
G | Privacy Tab -> View Cookies |
Accidently press "Remove All Cookies"
Where's the cancel button?
Oh there isn't one | |
Close | |
Use "Cancel" on options as a whole
Should have my cookies back no?
No | |
Fuckers!!!!! | |
Now I have to log back into every site in the whole world ever!
Phil | oh. my deepest condolences for your loss. |
i know it's a painful time.
G | I ended up looking at slashdot without the +5 filter |
I thought my eyes would bleed
Phil | haha! |
that really sucks | |
G | usamajility :) |
Phil | i can't imagine losing all my cookies |
i think i'd go insane |

G | Dave Winer is [redacted] |
I may have mentioned this before
Phil | yes he is |
has anything in particular caused this probably-justified outburst?
G | http://archive.scripting.com/2005/10/08#When:4:23:06PM |
The orange XML icon is an abomination.
Phil | yes |
without a shadow of a doubt
it's a blight on the internet
G | It's ugly and it doesn't represent what it does *at all* |
Phil | hang on - didn't he even admit that the other week when he was posting about a new orange "subscribe" button to be used with Yahoo!!!! ? |
http://www.reallysimplesyndication.com/2005/09/26#a970
"I worked real hard to get the NY Times on the RSS bandwagon, for example, only to have them mark up their page with dozens of "Add this to My Yahoo" icons. Wow. What an eyesore." - fucking hell! the nerve!
G | I wonder what his position on mailto icons is |
"Use the animated gif of a letter being written and jumping into an envelope, stop re-inventing"
Phil | ha! :) |
G | Also, he overloads the xml icon on his own site |
1 to point to an OPML file, one to point to RSS
Phil | excellent! |
you mean you can't figure out what to do with an arbitrary XML file?
you're not worth talking to.
*spits* | |
G | Does XML now mean "something an aggregator may or may not be able to handle" |
Phil | god knows |
he clearly can't even decide himself
G | And his blog template is shite |
For the "father of blogging" he has an unreadable, no page per article string of conciousness, unclear article boundry, fragile permalink mess.
Phil | wow, he not only overloads the white-on-orange XML icon, he also uses a different icon to link to another OPML file |
yes, trying to navigate his blog is a nightmare
G | Usamajility! |

Google's new aggregator
Phil: |
Everyone knows about it now. I have no words for how bad its interface is. Jesus fucking Christ. I'm expecting a lot more photos to crop in Flickr tagged with both "Google Reader" and "this is broken". My two in there should be enough to give you some rough idea. no words. |

Phil | where's that miranda option for keeping the window the same height as the contact list? |
i can't see it in the myriad options
G | Contact LIst / Window -- RHS "AUtomatically resize window to height of list" |
Phil | jesus |
thanks! | |
G | Steve Franklin wanted to use miranda until he saw the options pane ;) |
Phil | haha! |
about once a week I think about your bonjour-plugin and what a good idea that would be for our department, but then have to change an option. ten minutes of doing that later, and i've forgotten again
G | You should use my one stop packaged miranda wiht just the ichat in and the options set to sensible defaults |
Phil | the one that uses paths hard-coded to your machine? :) |
G | does it buggery |
or maybe it does, i don't know |
G: Shit me iTunes 5 looks ugly and out of place in windows
Phil: yes, i've not heard anything good about iTunes 5
G: Jesus the splitter between the left hand pane and the right is ONE PIXEL WIDE
FFS
FFS
Phil: jesus!
G: As are all the external borders
for resizing (assuming you don't use the gripper)
for resizing (assuming you don't use the gripper)
Phil: fucking hell
G: Use that on your laptop nipple
Phil: quality
Let's beat up on iTunes again.
When did it become acceptable to fuck with the menu bar? I've raged about this elsewhere.
Look where they've put the fucking menu!
In OSX land this new skin might be acceptable (but maybe not) since the menu lives at the top of the screen, not the app. In windows it just reduces the perceived draggable area.
And yes I know that you can drag the whole application, but that's quite non-standard too so you instinctively grab the top of the window.
Rubbish.

Whatever happened to "it just works"?
I tried to play some music off a colleague's computer today.
Turns out she had bought it from the iTMS.
So rather than playing some music, iTunes pops up this charming dialog.
The problems with this are just crazy. Firstly it's not my song, so how am I going to be able to authorize it?
Secondly the Apple ID it defaults to is not mine, or one I have ever heard of. Is it hers? Is it an example?
But mostly the problem is "if it's OK to stream your ripped CDs far and wide, why the fuck can't you stream iTMS tracks?"
It's like they don't want you to buy them. I've instinctively avoided buying any DRMed files, and now my colleague says she won't be buying any more either.
What a complete and utter fucking joke.
